Keertanas and Krutis are the most important compositions in Carnatic music and occupy the major portion of any performance or Cutcheri adding a spectrum of colours and rasas into the performance. The ancient Marga sangita consisted of keertanas in different ragas singing in praise of the Lord Almighty. Then came the Desya Sangita in which along with keertanas, Krutis have come into vogue primarily during the era of the Thyagaraja swamy who not only introduced the Sangati development in his compositions but also created compositions relating to tatwa sadhana, principles of life, sangita saara and rasa besides his compositions in praise of Lord Rama. The musical trinity as well as some of their followers have enriched the Carnartic music with innumerable compositions of their own and have added to the repertoire of Carnatic music. And each of these compositions in their own way have added to the flavor of Carnatic music and in some way or the other enhanced the understanding and development of the ragas. As the thought process of each composer is different it has added to new ways of performing the already existing ragas.

Carnatic music is always dynamic like a flowing river and more compositions from different composers will enrich the art form with new flavours. The Nutana Sata Keertana Swaravali is yet such an effort by one of the illustrious contemporary composers Sri Nallan Chakravarthy Murthy who has already made his presence felt with his Varnams in 72 Melakartas and rich Pada varnams in the five Ghana ragas for the first time in the History. It is hoped that the musicians, present and future, will welcome the effort and perform these new compositions also with enthusiasm.  

కీర్తనలూ, కృతులూ కర్ణాటక సంగీతము నందు అతి ముఖ్యమైన సంగీత రచనలు. సంగీత కచ్చేరీలలో అధికభాగం కృతులకూ కీర్తనలకే కేటాయించటం వలన రసానుభూతి కలుగుతుంది. ప్రాచీనకాలంలో ఉన్న మార్గసంగీతంలో కీర్తనలే వుండి భక్తిరసాన్ని పెంపొందిస్తూ వుండేవి. దేశ్య సంగీతం అభివృద్ధి చెందడంతో ప్రత్యేకంగా త్యాగరాజస్వామి వల్ల కీర్తలతో పాటుగా తత్త్వబోధ, జీవన విధానములనుద్దేశించి కృతులు అనే సంగీత రచనలు కల్పించబడి సంగీత పరిధిని, ప్రయోజనాన్ని పెంచాయి. సంగీత త్రిమూర్తులు, వారి స్ఫూర్తితో అనేకమంది ఇతర వాగ్గేయకారులు కల్పించిన సంగీత రచనల వలన అవగాహన, అనుభవం పెరిగి సంగీత జ్ఞానమున్నూ, ప్రదర్శనాపటిమ పెంపొందింది. కర్ణాటక సంగీతం ప్రవహించే జీవనది. సంగీత రచనలు పెరిగినకొద్దీ అవగాహన పెరుగుతోందనుటలో సందేహంలేదు. 'నూతన శతకీర్తన స్వరావళి' ఈ మార్గంలో మరోమెట్టు. ఇందలి కీర్తనలూ, కృతులూ సంగీతజ్ఞులకూ, సంగీతాభిమానులకు మరింత అవగాహన పెంపొందిస్తుందని భావిస్తూ ఈ రచనలు సంగీత రసికులకు ఆత్మానందం కలిగిస్తుందని ఆశిస్తున్నాను.
